As a business, we have a voice that reaches thousands of people, so we use this voice to urge people to be aware of some important issues facing our world. We are deeply concerned with the issues of environmental protection, animal welfare, and global poverty, particularly among women and children. The RubyHeart Sustainability Program is The Ruby's commitment to addressing these issues.
Our commitment towards promoting environmental and social responsibility in our supply chain is defined in our Sustainability Policy. We are committed to purchasing and using local and sustainably produced products, particularly from companies who are in alignment with our environmental and social sustainability efforts. The following are companies that we support and we encourage our guests to support them as well.
Founded in 1991, Horizon Organics was the first certified organic dairy to distribute products nationally in the United States. The company remains true to its vision for a more organic planet, purchasing milk from nearly 450 certified organic dairy farms and providing certified organic dairy products to natural foods retailers and supermarkets across the country. Horizon Organic's products are produced without the use of antibiotics, added growth hormones, or harmful pesticides. They also support family farmers and promote animal stewardship. That's the organic promise from the farmers to the consumers. For more information on the growing world of organic, visit www.horizonorganic.com.
Wholesome Sweeteners is dedicated to bringing the finest Fair Trade Certified, organic and natural sugars, syrups and nectars to consumers. These delicious artisanal sweeteners are made at some of the smallest mills in the world. In addition to incomparable flavor, each of their products is made with exceptional care for the planet and people. Wholesome Sweeteners holds fast to a "Fair Trade, Not Aid" philosophy. Wholesome pioneered fair trade certification for sweeteners and in so doing, fostered ever-widening agricultural and community development programs while providing stable economic resources for our cooperative partners in developing countries. They have created a viable economic incentive to protect communities, traditions and the environment. This means that farmers can compete against factory farms, keep their land (and buy more), send their kids to school, develop the quality of their crops, build thriving communities, and maintain sustainable farming practices.
Fair Trade Certified is a guarantee that farmers are paid a set premium for their crops. Money is wired directly to the cooperatives' accounts in Costa Rica, Malawi, Mexico and Paraguay. Since the last quarter of 2005, when Wholesome Fair Trade Certified the granulated sugar line, they have paid more than $1,500,000 in premiums to their cooperative partners (the social premium is paid above and beyond the market price paid for the sugar).
Fair Trade Certified is a promise that
- Farmers cooperatives are paid directly (no middlemen)
- The members receive a set price for their crops that is fair and reliable
- The cooperative has access to loans and additional premiums for community and business development
Making naturally pure and consistent flour for over 200 years is no easy task, but King Arthur Flour takes such pride in their flour that they wouldn’t have it any other way. They are motivated by knowing that every day, people across the country count on them and their products to make their baking the best it can be. And as an employee-owned company, that’s a responsibility they take very seriously.
King Arthur Flour likes to share with the world not just their passion, but their compassion. From providing meals and fresh-baked treats to our local shelters, to sending aid to hurricane-ravaged states; from teaching Dominicans to bake in their volunteer-built ovens, to feeding the hungry nationwide through regular donations to Share Our Strength, they are always looking for ways to help make the world a better place. At King Arthur Flour, making money in itself is not the highest priority; they view profit and wealth-creation as inevitable by-products of doing things well.
Seventh Generation is committed to becoming the world's most trusted brand of authentic, safe, and environmentally-responsible products for a healthy home. For 20 years, the closely held Burlington, Vermont-based company has been at the forefront of a cultural change in consumer behavior and business ethics.
One of the country's first self-declared "socially responsible" companies, Seventh Generation is a business that operates according to a new and different set of principles and values that in many ways are a marked departure from those long considered "traditional." Its business practice is focused on offering people avenues to express their idealism, passion, and commitment to causes larger than themselves at every point along its supply chain—from suppliers and partners to shareholders, customers and its own staff.
The company derives its name from the Great Law of the Iroquois that states, "In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations." Every time you use a Seventh Generation product you are making a difference by saving natural resources, reducing pollution, keeping toxic chemicals out of the environment and making the world a safer place for this and the next seven generations.

Camano Island Coffee Roasters helps to build schools, medical facilities, water systems, and many other infrastructure pieces in the communities they work with. This gives these communities something to build a heritage on. Something to start them on the right foot and keep them moving in a forward motion. Any one thing that can be done is not enough. They need the tools to continue on a forward motion. Camano Island Coffee Roasters is there to assist them and give them those tools.
